The Shekhawati region was founded by Rao Shehka after the fall of the Mughal Empire. The cheiftans of this region grew rich due to the levies imposed on the passing caravans. Lots of merchants relocated to this region due to Shekhawati's strategic location on the trading route. Soon lots of wealthy Marwari traders made Shekhawati their home. It is these wealthy merchants who started the trend of constructing elaborate Havelis that have stood the test of time and have become tourist attractions of today.
Unlike other regions of Rajasthan where war dominates the history, Shekawati's history is more defined by trade and art.
